The first school term 2023 started with a Mathematics Modelling workshop directed at the broader Saldanha Bay Education Community. Freeport Saldanha, the West Coast Education District, the Western Cape Education Department and the universities of Stellenbosch and the Witwatersrand hosted a “Mathematical Modelling” Lecture/Workshop at the Access Complex, Freeport Saldanha IDZ. The workshop was presented by Professor Rita Borromeo Ferri and Andreas Meister from the University of Kassel in Germany. The event successfully attracted a strong representation from the Saldanha Bay Mathematics Community, with the attendance of mathematics teachers and West Coast District and Head Office officials specifically responsible for developing and implementing the mathematics curriculum.

Big thanks go to Dr Erna Lampen of the University of Stellenbosch. Since its implementation, Dr Lampen and the University of Stellenbosch have been associated with the Freeport Saldanha Schools’ Development Programme.

Education is fundamental to changing the economic landscape in Saldanha Bay.
